Audiobooks are growing in popularity but, as I have found out, not all books should be made into audiobooks.
My book The Girl Who Took For-EVER is a great colouring storybook, and funny to read with a child. Read the reviews, parents love it.
But it turned into a 12 minute audiobook that sells on Audible.com for more than I would pay for it. To date, it has sold about six in nearly two years.
Furthermore, an audiobook will only boost sales (generally) if your book is doing well enough for people to want to hear it in another format.
Producing one can be expensive - but that doesn't mean you can't use extracts of your book for promotion.
Video is the go to medium these days - apparently people are 20 times more likely to view a video.
However, audio is still a great experience and let's say you were to record a snippet from your book as a taster. It gives you another method of promotion AND may intrigue.
I did this with several books - and you can find snippets elsewhere on this website. But I also recorded the first story in The Granny JJ Adventures: Guyana's Daily Detective and then the project kinda fell by the wayside.
I include it here to give you an example of what you can do - and hopefully to interest you to check out the book itself.
It's hosted on Soundcloud.
We used free Audacity recording software, free sound effects (from copyright free sites) and 'no', it's perhaps not professional quality. But the story is read in the accent of the narrator, and it does bring it to life.
You need to stimulate people's imagination and curiosity. Hope you hear this - and wonder what you can do for yourself.
Regards,
Joshua
